A smooth move is a planned move. Between booking movers, arranging DEWA, sorting building permits and updating your Ejari, there is more to a Dubai relocation than packing boxes. Use this week-by-week checklist so nothing gets missed and moving day runs on time.

3–4 weeks before

  • Book your movers. Get a fixed written quote after a free survey. Confirm the date early, especially near month-end.
  • Give notice on your current tenancy if required, and confirm your new move-in date.
  • Declutter. Donate, sell or bin what you will not use. You pay to move volume.
  • Plan special items — pianos, safes, large artwork, aquariums — so the crew brings the right equipment.

2 weeks before

  • Arrange building permits. Most towers and communities need a move-in/move-out permit or NOC and a booked service lift. Star Edge handles these for you at both ends.
  • Schedule DEWA. Request a move-out (final bill) for your old home and a move-in for the new one via the DEWA app, timed so utilities are active on arrival.
  • Book internet transfer (du or Etisalat/e&) — these can take days, so start early.
  • Update your address with your bank, RTA, insurance and subscriptions.

Dubai tip: service-lift slots in popular towers get booked out at month-end. Confirming your permit and lift early is the difference between starting at 9am and waiting until afternoon.

1 week before

  • Confirm packing. If the movers are packing, they bring all materials. If you are self-packing, label boxes by room and mark fragiles.
  • Pack an essentials bag — documents, chargers, medication, a change of clothes, toiletries — for the first night.
  • Set aside valuables and documents (passports, Ejari, title deed) to carry yourself.
  • Defrost the fridge a day before and empty/clean it.
  • Confirm timings with your movers and both buildings.

Labelling boxes by room makes unpacking hours faster at the new home.

Moving day

  • Be present (or nominate someone) to direct the crew and confirm the inventory.
  • Do a final walkthrough of the old home — cupboards, balcony, storeroom, maid's room.
  • Check DEWA is active at the new property and lights/AC work.
  • Point the crew to where furniture and boxes go so setup is right first time.
  • Keep your essentials bag and valuables with you, not on the truck.

After you move in

  • Register or update your Ejari for the new property.
  • Collect community access cards and parking permits.
  • Test appliances and check for any transit damage (report it promptly).
  • Update your address on Emirates ID records and with your employer.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I start planning a move in Dubai?

Start 3–4 weeks ahead if you can. That gives time to book movers, arrange building permits, and schedule DEWA disconnection and reconnection without rushing. Urgent moves are possible — Star Edge can often arrange next-day.

How do I cancel or transfer my DEWA when moving?

Log in to the DEWA app or website, request a move-out (final bill) for your old premises and a move-in for your new one. Do this a few days before your move so power and water are active on arrival.

Do I need a moving permit in Dubai?

Most apartment buildings and gated communities require a move-in/move-out permit or NOC and a booked service lift. Star Edge arranges these with building management on your behalf.

What should I do with my Ejari and tenancy documents?

Keep your new Ejari, tenancy contract and title deed handy — you will need them for DEWA, internet setup, and community access cards. Register or update Ejari for the new property.

When is the best time to move in Dubai?

Mid-month and mid-week are calmest and easiest to book. Month-end is peak because leases end on the 30th. Avoid peak summer afternoons for comfort if you can.
